An experience sharing presentation on entrepreneurships and their curriculum in higher institutions was held on May 15, 2015 in Red Hall. The presentation was organized by Mr Teklay Berhe, from the Department of Management, in collaboration with the office of ARVP, Dire Dawa University.
The purpose of the presentation, according Mr Teklay, was to share an experience and understand the content, importance and nature of academic inputs in entrepreneurship courses at higher learning institutions.
Mr Teklay who made the experiences sharing presentation on entrepreneurship after participating on the six week training in an institution called Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDI) that was held under the theme of Entrepreneurship Education to Strengthen the Emerging Economies, first explained the theoretical component of entrepreneurship educations taking the experience of one of a reputable and specialized college on entrepreneurship education called Babson College, and then related the component with higher institution entrepreneurship curriculum of Ethiopia particularly with course curriculum given in Dire-Dawa University.
During his presentation, he said that entrepreneurship is important not only for business people, but also for all individual outside business world. In recent years, he added, entrepreneurship has been extended from its origins in business to include individuals and social activity. Yet, he added, still most people considered entrepreneurship to be confined in business area. And this is also true among the academic staff of higher institutions.
He said that an entrepreneurship educations should considered the target group, entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial mindset and linkage with industries. He added ‘entrepreneurship within an existing institution or an organization has been referred to as ‘entrepreneurship’. And it may include business ventures where workers at large institutions like DDU may participate in a new business creation activity.
He said we give an entrepreneurship in order to give students competence. And competence has three areas of development. These are knowledge (head), attitude (heart) and skill (hand). When we teach students these competences repetitively, they will become a habit. And curriculum should be designed based on these competences.
He then analyzed DDU entrepreneurial curriculum based on Babson College curriculum for course on ‘entrepreneurship and new ventures’. He found out that in the mentioned college, 30% of the course content covers on knowledge, 60% on skills and 10% on attitude. However when analyzed entrepreneurship curriculum at DDU, by considering contents of the course outline per chapter such as entrepreneurship and enterprise(info), small Business(info), business planning(skill) product and service concept(info), marketing new venture development(skill), organizing and financing the new venture(info), managing growth and transaction(skill) and forms of business organization(info) he concluded that our course content covers on knowledge, 80% on skills and 20% and on attitude 0%. It dedicates less nothing to attitude which is one of the most important elements in gaining competency. This results how much our entrepreneurship curriculums lack attitude which is also the problem of most our graduating students in career.
Thus, he recommends that our entrepreneurship course curriculum should be redesigned based on the Babson College entrepreneurship course contents which allow students to practice and interact. He also suggested the possible contents.
Mr. Teklay Berhe presented five books on entrepreneurship to the University Library at the end of presentation.
